Title: Problems running the Cisco vWLC with vSphere and ESXi

Hi all,

Hope some one in here can help.

I have installed ESXi 5.5 Server on VMware Workstation 10 on my desktop computer and I am able to connect to it with my vSphere Client. I followed the instructions in the video  http://www.labminutes.com/wlc0001_vwlc_7_3_vmware_installation after downloading the OVA for the vWLC "Cisco-vWLC-AIR-CTVM-7-3-101-0.ova". I was able to deploy the OVA file just fine as per the video instructions and install the VM, but when I tried to power on the vWLC in vSphere I got this error message:

"Failed to start the virtual machine.
This virtual machine is configured for 64-bit guest operating systems. However, 64-bit operation is not possible.
This host does not support Intel VT-x.
For more detailed information, see http://vmware.com/info?id=152. "

I checked all my desktop settings and my machine does support Intel Virtualization Technology (Intel VT-x) and is running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium with virtualization enabled (which is why I assume I am able to run VM's in Workstation 10 at all!). In addition I have a 64-bit version of ESXi 5.5 Server ("VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.5.0-1331820.x86_64" downloaded from VMware's website) installed in Workstation which is working just fine. So I am at a loss at what to do. Hope any one can help.

 Since this is not a usual method supported by Cisco, it obviously might require some hacking around. I personally have not tried the way you described so we will have to see if others who might have done this can help. In the meantime, do you have a machine you can install a ESXi directly on without going through VMware workstation? May be even try ESXi5.1?

Hi,

You will need to adjust the visualization setting from your system bios under system configuration you need to check Virtualization technology option. Without this option selected at the bios your window system will keep giving you error.

try it out and let us have your response.

Thanks for your reply. I already did that before posting and it still gives the same error. In my BIOS Virtualization is set to active but I have the same problem.

Have you tried deploying the OVA file directly under VMware Workstation.

This is how I've deployed Cisco's Prime Infrastructure and it works fine.

I suspect the VT-x flag is getting lost in the extra layer of virtualisation, but you may be adding an unnecessary layer of complexity.

Edit to add:
Just remembered, I've also deployed ISE 1.1 directly under VMware Workstation and it also works fine.

I will try to run the vWLC OVA directly from Workstation although I do want to simulate a full lab with a virtual switch as per the video http://www.labminutes.com/wlc0001_vwlc_7_3_vmware_installation and not sure I can do that with the vWLC inside Workstation and the virtual switch inside vSphere running separately?

I see.

I've assembled an ESXi server on dedicated hardware - it needn't be expensive.

The following website lists hardware/motherboards known to work with VMware ESXi:

I can confirm the Asus P5QL Pro motherboard, which can be picked up quite cheaply on eBay and any Intel dual or quad core CPU (socket 775) will work nicely. You can install up to 8GB of RAM with this motherboard.

I have the following VMs on my ESXi box:
3 x Linux servers (each consuming 512MB RAM)
Windows 2008 Server R2
Cisco ISE v1.2
Windows 7 domain PC for testing ISE.

I guess this is more an hardware issues that system setting. I have a laptop with vmware workstation and I was able it up without issues.

Maybe you should try another system to isolate where the issues are.

What device you have the AP connected to? If it is a L3 switch, you should configure that as your default gateway.
